Facts Regarding Fibrolamellar Carcinoma
-
Fibrolamellar Carcinoma (FLC) is an incredibly rare cancer of the liver that affects teens and young adults with an otherwise healthy liver

-
FLC is seen in only 1 of 5 million people, it’s rarity comes with scarce amounts of data and statistical information, leaving minimal treatment options

-
In the early stages of the disease, affected patients often have no symptoms, so by the time the cancer is found, it may have already spread beyond the liver

-
It is estimated that the survivorship rate is less than 30% over 5 years; prognosis remains poor

-
When symptoms develop, they are most commonly the following: abdominal pain, weight loss, and malaise – a general feeling of being unwell

-
There is no standard of care, although surgery typically is encouraged as it yields a more favorable prognosis
